advent 1

From Rebecca Groh ...

Growing up, I was always involved with the church’s music ministry. One memory from that time lodged firmly in my head is that of looking forward to being a part of the Chorister Choir for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Aside from getting to be the stars in musical each spring, they got to learn and sing the descant in O Come All Ye Faithful during the Children’s Choir Plum Pudding Festival. We sang songs as separate choirs and hymns all together with the rest of the congregation. Though most people would point to the living nativity or the candlelit environment, or even to the dads walking around with chef hats and plum pudding during the final song as the highlight of the night, for me it was always singing “O Come All Ye Faithful” because of that descant. Sadly, I cannot find a recording with the descant exactly how we sang it, but the video I included comes close. Now, each time we sing the verse that begins, “Sing choirs of angels…” I try to be as angelic as an alto can be to sing that descant. It makes my Christmas every year.

Music from David Reid

Seriously, which large, jolly man would you rather have come down your chimney on Christmas Eve –

Santa Claus or Louis Armstrong? I’ll take the trumpet player/singer every time.  My Dad introduced me to this song many years ago and I could not resist buying the classic Hipster’s Holiday album. Warning: you’ll be subjected to this if you visit us during December.

’Zat You, Santa Claus? – Louis Armstrong

Bonus tracks! Some others from Hipster’s Holiday, if you have time for more laughs:

Santa Baby by Earth Kitt

We Wanna See Santa Do the Mambo by Big John Greer

Five Pound Box of Money by Pearl Bailey

Christmas Night in Harlem by Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars
