Youth Ministry - Come Explore Youth Ministry at FUMC!

Youth are a vital and exciting part of the ministry here at First United Methodist Church. The Youth Program strives to meet the needs of teenagers as they grow in their faith and become more engaged with the United Methodist Church. We offer classes, events and meetings that strive to push young people to explore the possibilities of faith and the calling of God in their lives.

Get Connected - We offer four exciting opportunities for Youth:
  1. Sunday School Classes
  2. Confirmation
  3. United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF)
  4. UMYF Planning Teams

Youth Blog
Check out the Youth Blog for now grown to include full copies of the Young Methodist Reporter, UMYF schedules, T.U.F. postings as well as the Song-of-the-Week offerings. It is your one stop shop for everything youth here at FUMC. You can search through old Reporters for information you might have lost and you can reply with ideas for programs, devotionals, etc. Check it out and if you have suggestions for anything else that might be helpful to post please e-mail me and we will get it done. http://fcfumc-youth.blog.com/

Sunday School – We offer a class for Sixth grade youth, that seeks to help in their transition into teenage life. The class explores faith and how faith interacts with family, school and their changing culture. Our Seventh & Eighth grade class seeks to apply faith to the lives of teenagers and hopes to stimulate conversation. The Senior High class is a topical and Biblical exploration that seeks to challenge older youth to grow in the knowledge and understanding of religious traditions, the Bible, history and faith. The classes are taught by dedicated parents and Rev. Joel Kershaw (Associate of Youth Ministries). Sunday School classes will begin on September 10th during the 9:15 worship hour in the Youth Area.

Confirmation – Confirmation is an introduction to the Christian faith, history and theology. We explore the foundations of Christianity, the United Methodist tradition and the current church. Many are baptized as infants, their parents promising to raise them in a Christian home and to teach them about faith in God. Confirmation is that time in a young person’s life, regardless of baptism, when they explore the possibility of accepting the Christian faith for themselves. This class is offered once every school year to youth in ninth grade or higher and runs every other week from October through April. This year’s class begins with a parent & youth meeting on Sunday September 17th from 12:00-1:30 p.m. Classes will meet at that same time throughout the year starting October 1st.

United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF) – UMYF meets on Sunday evenings from 6:00 – 8:00. These gatherings are an opportunity to meet other youth, join with old friends and grow closer to God trough worship, singing, games and discussion. This group also participates in retreats, lock-ins, service projects, mission trips, and leading worship for the congregation. We come together to grow in our faith through fellowship, prayer, worship and dialogue. Come and join us for Faith, Fellowship and Fun! Our Fall schedule for UMYF kicks of on Friday September 8th at 8:00 p.m. with a lock-in at the church! Details and the full schedule will be posted below soon!

UMYF Planning Teams – Our regular UMYF nights feature programs on various topics involving religion, faith, life and fun. These programs are planned by teams of youth and advised by Joel. They are then led each week by the planning teams and include worship, announcements, devotion, games & program. Each team works on UMYF for a month. For more info or to volunteer contact Joel.

The Youth Program at FUMC features two weekly e-mails. The Young Methodist Reporter is a weekly e-mail newsletter highlighting the ministry of youth here at FUMC. The Reporter features articles on the impact of youth throughout the church, notices for upcoming events and input from youth in the group, and is the best way to keep up on the happenings of the Youth Program.

If you would like to receive either of these e-mails just send a quick note to Rev. Kershaw at jkershaw@fcfumc.net.

If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about the Youth Program at FUMC please write or e-mail me. I am glad to help any youth or parent find the ministry opportunity that fits their needs!

Yours in Christ,
Joel (a.k.a "Peej")
