Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we provide you the Fall 2009 catalog for "Learning For Life" A Center for Theological and Spiritual Growth at FCFUMC.

As FUMC’s Adult Education ministry has grown and developed over the past few years, it’s become clear that our mission is not simply to offer more classes on a wider variety of topics. Instead, our mission is to support the spiritual growth of adult FUMC members and the community at large by providing education, resources and community that empower them to grow in faith, deepen in theological reflection and become agents of transformation in our world.

As adults, we’ve moved beyond a traditional teacher/student learning model with its emphasis on argument and expertise. We grow spiritually and theologically through our engagement with others and through reflection on our own experience. It’s through engagement with others that we become a learning community of faith and we think of ourselves as both teachers and learners.

As members of a learning community of faith, we’re in a life-long process of inquiry: What are meaningful ways for us to be Christian and to put our Christian faith into practice in the world? This inquiry and our answers form or shape our lives. It is the process and practice of Christian maturity. It is our journey of faith.

Adult education is more than content – lining up teachers, developing programs, leading Bible studies. It’s about developing learning communities that become agents of transformation in the world. There is a link between our formation as Christians and our awareness of God’s call to us as individuals and as a church. For that reason, we’ve changed our name to Adult Faith Formation. Working with the Northern Colorado Faith Library, Community & World Outreach and other groups in the church, Adult Faith Formation offers education, resources and community to enrich your faith journey.

We invite you to participate more fully in our learning community of faith as a learner, as a mentor.

Martha Conant,
Adult Education Coordinator
